Spurling's Test (Cervical Radicular Syndrome)

Testing position: The patient is standing or seated. Examiner turns and tilts the patient’s head and neck toward the painful side and then adds a compressive force to the top of the head.
Expected Findings: Cervical extension is used to reproduce posterior bulging of the intervertebral disk. Rotation of the head causes narrowing of the neuroforamina in the cervical spine. Axial load exaggerats the preexisting nerve root compression. The test is positive with the reproduction of cervical radiculopathy symptoms (pain radiates to the ipsilateral upper extremity to the direction of head rotation).
