When to consider hemoperfusion?
Authors from Italy state that there are no established indications for hemoperfusion. Nonetheless, they describe several biologically and pathophysiological rational indications, so let's take a look. The first one is intoxication due to toxic natural products, drugs or chemicals. The most advanced hemoperfusion devices used for such treatment have an extraction rates from 20 to 90% (Cytosorb® cartridges). Liver and renal diseases are also a common pathology requiring hemoperfusion. Nonetheless, sepsis is one of the most important and well established indications. Two methods here include selective and non-selective hemoperfusion. New sorbent materials are now widely researched and applied for clinical use to increase efficacy. More by the link!
