The Effect of Age and Sex on Ischemıc Stroke

According to World Stroke Organisation, there are over 12.2 million new strokes each year. Globally, one in four people over age 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. A recent research from Turkey aimed to study the effects of age and sex on acute ischemic stroke survival and treatment. Among 368 patients with such diagnosis during the course of investigation, 48.6% were age over 65 years. Importantly, the proportion of women increased with age. Obesity and hypertension were found to be the most common risk factors. The main goal of the treatment is to restore blood flow to the regions of brain that are ischemic but not yet infarcted, which can be achieved with the reperfusion therapy (RT). It was found that older patients receive less RT, thus having a higher mortality rate. More details by the link.
