The Effect of a Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement on Immune Function in Healthy Older Adults
It is evidence based knowledge that multiple nutrients support immune function. Low vitamin C intake is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia and severe respiratory infection, low zinc levels correlate with impaired immune function, vitamin D is critical for both innate and adaptive immune function. But may older adults benefit from multivitamin and mineral (MVM) supplements? Authors from Oregon, USA studied if MVM could improve immune function in individuals 55 and older. Eligible men and women between 55 and 75 years old were recruited to this research project. Two groups included either an MVM supplement or an identical, inactive placebo control to take daily for 12 weeks. Authors found that zinc and vitamin C levels increased significantly in the experimental group participants. As such, statistically significant decrease in reported length and severity of illnesses in the MVM arm versus the placebo arm was confirmed.
