The blue nevus: identify, evaluate and manage

Blue nevi are acquired melanotic dermal lesions, commonly found on the scalp, extremities, sacrococcygeal region, or buttocks. Any worries for malignancy? 2 subtypes include common blue nevus (typically found in young adults) and while cellular variant (in middle-aged individuals). Up to this day, the etiology remains unclear. They usually present as a solitary, well-demarcated, blue to black nodule. Blue nevus is mainly diagnosed at a physical exam, however an excision biopsy is considered a gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. An accepted methodology for screening is ABCDE’s (Asymmetry, irregular Borders, Color variation, Diameter greater than 6 mm, Evolving). The preferred treatment of this pathology is excision, though it is appropriate to monitor stable lesions clinically. More by the link!
