Potential of ketogenic diet in neurological disorders

Recent research has shed light on the potential therapeutic benefits of the ketogenic diet (KD) in neurological disorders. A review article from researchers at Johns Hopkins University comprehensively evaluated the role of KD in conditions such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease.

The findings suggest that KD may reduce seizure frequency in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, with some studies reporting up to a 50% reduction. Moreover, emerging evidence indicates that KD may improve cognitive function and mitochondrial function in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, respectively. The neuroprotective effects of KD are thought to be mediated by ketone bodies, which provide an alternative energy source for neurons.

Published in the Journal of Neurology, the review underscores the potential of KD as an adjunctive therapy in neurological disorders. Healthcare providers should consider incorporating KD into treatment plans for patients with refractory epilepsy or neurodegenerative diseases.
