Pharmacogenomics in pregnancy - prescription considerations

According to the recent research, approximately 80% of women take one of more medication during their first trimester. The major concern is that efficacy of pharmaceutical substances is greatly affected by physiological pregnancy states. An article published in "Seminars in Perinatology" journal looks into main principles of drug metabolism during pregnancy and application considerations. Such changes as hormone levels, increased plasma volume, higher renal clearance and altered hepatic metabolism are the reason to consider a different prescription approach to a pregnant woman. However, there are no prescribing guidelines specific to such pharmacogenomics up to this date. In this publication, authors provide a detailed information on pharmacogenomic liability of the most commonly prescribed therapy during pregnancy. Overall, understanding the dynamic metabolic pathways and more research is needed to successfully manage drug therapy in pregnancy. Check out more in the original article.
