Overnight joint replacement surgery

Given the current landscape characterized by cost constraints and extensive waitlists for joint replacement surgery, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, there's a pressing need to explore the advantages of an overnight surgery model post total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR). Authors from Australia have presented findings regarding the safety of this approach, focusing on various outcomes such as hospital stay duration, inpatient rehabilitation, patient functional outcomes, satisfaction levels, and adverse events. The study included 56 patients undergoing THR and 55 patients undergoing TKR.
The results of this study indicate that opting for overnight joint replacement surgery does not pose an increased risk to patient safety. Additionally, it showcases comparable functional improvements post-surgery across both groups. Furthermore, the successful implementation of the overnight model demonstrates substantial cost savings. Notably, the median length of stay was significantly shorter compared to the control group, with durations of 1 day versus 3 days, respectively. The authors of the study concluded that overnight THR and TKR can be safely conducted for the majority of patients, provided there's a well-structured multidisciplinary protocol in place.
