Optimal Support of Wound Healing
The article published in Dermatology journal provides a detailed review on the process of wound healing. The skin barrier recovery from injury occurs in 3 sequential phases: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. As such, approaches to wound management ideally have to target different aspects of each phase simultaneously. Treatment management of wounds should therefore involve: protection from infection and free radicals, modulation of inflammation, as well as support of cell proliferation. In case of wound infection, an antiseptic should be used as soon as possible. In vivo and in vitro studies suggest that dexpanthenol may assist wound healing in all three stages, promoting epidermal keratinocyte proliferation.
