Safety Concerns of Skin, Hair and Nail Supplements in Retail Stores

Beauty supplements for hair and skin became very popular over the last decade. But do we know enough about safety and efficacy of the ingredients involved? In fact, due to minimal regulations for the dietary supplements, their entry for the sale is much easier than for medications. A total of 14 vitamins and 15 minerals were included in this study by Houston group of researchers. A number of products contained doses far exceeding the FDA-recommended daily value and only 3.4% displayed testing by recognized organizations. Chronic high-dose supplementation of certain minerals can cause health issues like neuropathy, gastrointestinal disturbances and vasodilation. It is important for physicians educate patients to pay attention on ingredients and daily values to avoid risks of adverse, long-term health outcomes. More by the link.
