Innovations in vision restoration

40% of the global population aged over 50 (446 millions) have vision impairment. Loss of independence and compromised life quality are the main physical and emotional challenges. Thus, sight restoration remains one of the leading research vectors worldwide. An article published in Cell Stem Cell Journal describes the clinical status of ocular regenerative therapies. The most novel are the bioengineering approaches. This technology allows biomanufacture and bioassembly of functional eye tissues, including 3D printing. Tissue-specific stem-cells can be differentiated, purificated, assembled in tissue and finally transplanted. A variety of such implants have been already tested in preclinical and clinical studies. Check all the exciting advances and challenges in the original article.
