Dental Whitening- Strengths and Weaknesses of bleaching methods

Nowadays, general health state often being neglected in attempts for aesthetic results. Authors from Italy aimed to evaluate all of the advantages and disadvantages of the dental bleaching through the use of whitening gels. In general, there are two ways of whitening: mechanical or chemical bleaching. In any case it can be done by a professional or at home. Clearly, the professional one is more effective time-wise and in degree of whitening. Of 263 studies analyzed, only 14 contained sufficient data to evaluate the side effects of the treatment. A list of complications included: tooth sensitivity, skin cold sensation, pain, difficulty in oral hygiene. Summing up all the data it appears that patients with dental hypersensitivity have to refrain from bleaching procedures to avoid complications, such as enamel erosion.
