Lotus essential oil for recovery after peripheral nerve injury

An interesting research project was recently presented by authors from Thailand. It is a known fact that optimal functional recovery requires a faster long-distance regeneration of nerves. As such, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of lotus essential oil (LEO) on the nerve growth and regeneration in a rat model of sciatic nerve crush injury. This plant is known as lotus or Bualuang in Thai, an aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. All it's parts are widely used in traditional herbal medicine for such beneficial pharmacological effects, as antimicrobial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory. For this research a whole lotus flower was used for extraction. Authors have found that LEO improves neurite growth and elongation followed by locomotor functional recovery by day 28 after sciatic nerve crush. That means that processes for nerve repair and functional recovery can be significantly improved. All the details by the link!
