LED therapy: a modern approach to pain management
Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), involving low-intensity laser and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), offers a non-invasive, drug-free method for pain relief. PBMT has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing pain and inflammation, promoting healing, and enhancing tissue regeneration. This therapy is particularly effective in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including non-specific knee pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorders, neck pain, and low back pain.
Clinical studies have shown that PBMT can reduce pain intensity significantly. For instance, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) revealed that PBMT decreased Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores by 50% in patients with non-specific knee pain, and these improvements were maintained for 30 days post-treatment. Similarly, PBMT has been effective in managing pain after total hip arthroplasty, with a reported 82% reduction in pain compared to placebo immediately following surgery. In osteoarthritis, PBMT combined with exercise programs has shown to reduce pain intensity effectively. A meta-analysis of 22 RCTs highlighted that appropriate doses of PBMT significantly decreased pain in knee osteoarthritis compared to placebo. Furthermore, PBMT has demonstrated positive outcomes in fibromyalgia treatment, reducing pain points and improving quality of life when used alongside exercise.
PBMT's mechanism involves increasing cell proliferation, accelerating the healing process, and modulating inflammatory responses. It directly affects the sodium-potassium pump in nerve cells, reducing pain signals and inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 and interleukin-6.
