Impact of sugar on the body, brain, and behavior

The present study published in Frontiers of Bioscience Journal explores sugar and its physiological effects on human brain and body, including potential side health effects. Authors discuss different types of sugar (namely fructose and glucose), how they are processed by the body and brain, potential addictive properties, and connections with obesity. Excessive sugar consumption is known to have association with cognitive impairments, as worsened hippocampal memory function. Some reports state that human brain may have an addiction to food, especially to processed food with high concentrations of added sugar or fat. However, sugar consumption on itself will not result in weight gain or obesity. Nonetheless, combination of fat and sugar induce weight gain. More in the original article.
