Health benefits of matcha green tea

Matcha belongs to a Japanese powdered green tea type, grown in a traditional way where the tea bushes are covered with bamboo mats protecting those from direct sunlight exposure. This allows to achieve higher amounts of amino acids and bioactive compounds effecting the taste, aroma and bright matcha colour. Compared to other types, this green tea has a relatively high caffeine content- from 11.3 to 24.67 mg/g. Talking about health benefits, temperature and time to brew have a major impact on the chemical composition and properties of this tea beverage. High infusion temperature allows extraction of biologically active compounds. A study by Komes et al. examined the optimal values and find out the best guidelines: 3-min brewing time at 100 °C water. As such, the main matcha health benefits include: anticarcinogenic properties, cardioprotective and anti-Inflammatory effects, antiviral properties and improvement of cognitive function.
