Efficacy of bisphosphonate therapy on postmenopausal osteoporotic women with and without diabetes: a prospective trial
Both osteoporosis and diabetes are common in postmenopausal women. An article published a few month ago provides the answers on safety and efficacy of bisphosphonates on patients age of at least 55 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus. A total of 120 patients were enrolled receiving 150 mg of ibandronate for 1 year. No significant difference was observed in the changes in BMD between the diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Measurements evaluating glucose metabolism in diabetic patients did not significantly differ either. In terms of safety, the incidence of adverse effects was mostly equal between the groups. Authors came to a conclusion that oral ibandronate can be a safe and effective therapeutic option in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients with diabetes.
