Current trends in image-guided chest interventions
Interventional Radiology (IR) is a rapidly evolving medical subspecialty employing a variety of minimally invasive procedures guided by imaging modalities like fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, or MRI. These procedures, whether diagnostic (biopsy, angiogram) or therapeutic (balloon dilatation, stent insertion), offer precise treatment with minimal invasiveness, facilitated by real-time visualization and precise placement of instruments.
The benefits of IR procedures are manifold, including reduced risks, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, lower costs, and increased patient comfort. However, procedures involving ionizing radiation, like fluoroscopy and CT, carry radiation risks, albeit often outweighed by the benefits. Advances in imaging technology, particularly multidetector row CT and high-field strength MRI, have expanded the range of conditions treatable through IR. These technologies provide superior image quality, aiding accurate diagnosis and localization of pathology.
IR plays a crucial role in modern medical practice, offering precise and minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Despite inherent radiation risks, the benefits of these procedures often outweigh the potential drawbacks, contributing to improved patient outcomes and enhanced healthcare delivery.
