Cannabidiol - current and future indications
Cannabidiol becomes an accepted medicine for various health pathologies. Indian hemp (or Cannabis sativa) is a natural textile fiber, but it also accounts over 400 chemical compounds. Of those, the most important psychoactive compound is tetrahydrocannabinol (TCH). However, the most popularized ones are: cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN). Of note, FDA highlights the potential beneficial effects of cannabis derivatives, but approved only 3 synthetic cannabis-related drug products. 2 products with dronabinol are used to treat anorexia due to weight loss, and nabilone is prescribed for nausea and vomiting associated with anticancer chemotherapy. A cannabis-derived compound CBD has been approved for children suffering from the seizure disorders. Ongoing clinical investigations are researching other potential applications for mood disorders, chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
