Bone-Protective Effects of Dried Plum in Postmenopausal Women: Efficacy and Possible Mechanisms
Every postmenopausal woman runs a risk of fragility fractures due to loss of bone mass and quality. Physical activity and right nutrition are know to create a positive impact on this pathology. A variety of studies have been published in the area of bone metabolism and health, suggesting that dried plum (Prunus domestica L.) is the most effective in preventing and reversing bone loss. It has been investigated for its bioactive compound composition including dietary fiber, vitamin K, boron, copper and magnesium. Authors from Florida researched on various clinical trials and conducted the study comparing the effects of the daily consumption of 100 g dried plum to 75 g dried apple. The investigation also included the potential mechanisms of action showing increased osteoprotegerin levels and decreased serum sclerostin levels. A dose efficacy evaluation confirmed that a dose of 50g per day is effective. More details by the link.
