Biotin efficacy - myth or truth?

Recent publicity of Biotin (B7 or vitamin H) is known for promoting the growth of hair and nails. Indications to use this water-soluble vitamin remain unclear and often described as unnecessary in healthy individuals. As such, U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not recommend daily biotin usage. That excludes breastfeeding and pregnant patients, that may take from 5 mcg/ to 35 mcg/day. Biotin is a safe and nontoxic vitamin, excreted by body when in excess. That suggests no potential contraindications for taking this supplement. Important consideration, however is smoking- increased doses may be required due to increased metabolism. Without the evidence to support regular usage, beauty industry claims and heavy marketing need to be challenged to better explain the efficacy and safety of this drug.
