Approach to probiotics in pediatrics

World Health Organization states that probiotics are “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. Authors from Argentina aimed to perform a descriptive review of probiotic use in pediatrics. Acute gastroenteritis, prevention and management of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, infant colic, and atopic eczema are all indications for use. Literature review suggests that L. rhamnosus GG (LGG) and S. boulardii are proven to be safe and effective for the disease prevention, duration shortening and symptoms reduction. The latest evidence is also very promising in relation to probiotic use in the field of neonatology in preterm newborn infants, helping to reduce the incidence of such complications as late-onset sepsis, and overall mortality.
