Antibiotic resistance in the environment

Many bacterial species evolved the ability to tolerate antibiotics. The relatively recent introduction of antibiotics as clinical agents radically changed the preconditions for the evolution and spread of resistance, gradually increasing difficulties to prevent and treat bacterial infections. All currently used antibiotic classes have been met by resistance in at least some of the pathogens they target. A study from Sweden discuss principles that may help to reduce risks, taking to account challenges in low- and middle-income countries. Using basic treatment of waste streams (industrial, municipal) can addresses many types of risks. Additional cleaning of wastewaters with such methods as ozonation or activated carbon is a second step that would remove main selective agents and a large range of additional contaminants.
