Advances in Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy in Hair Loss

Novel hair loss (HL) treatment approaches, including hair tissue engineering and stem cell therapy, bacame a highly discussed topic. Cutting-edge methods using external cell sources or progenitor cells (PCs) are being tested in clinical trials for cell treatment. Italian authors have undertaken a review, shedding light on the significant advancements in intraoperative stem cell techniques, from in vivo models to clinical investigations.
Intra-surgical collection of adult stem cells and PCs can be carried out from several tissues, such as fat tissue, scalp tissue, bone marrow (BM), and peripheral blood. Among these sources, fat tissue stands out due to its cells' multi-lineage differentiation potential. Harvesting fat tissue is accomplished through a less invasive technique, mainly through liposuction, allowing for larger quantities of cells compared to BM. Another exciting field explores the potential use of fat and stromal vascular fraction cells (SVFs) for hair regrowth. SVFs are a diverse collection of non-cultured cells that can be consistently extracted from fat using minimal manipulation techniques involving centrifugation, filtration, and fat tissue purification.
While numerous promising stem cell approaches are advancing from pre-clinical models to clinical trials, intraoperative stem cell treatments with a one-step procedure offer the advantage of providing quicker results. By incorporating an autologous cell source without extensive manipulation, surgeons can inject these cells using well-established clinical practices. These cutting-edge approaches hold promise for addressing hair loss and may revolutionize the field of hair restoration, offering hope to individuals seeking effective and convenient treatments for this common concern.
