A Cross-sectional Analysis: Instagram Nevus Treatment

Over a third of US patients rely on social platforms for health-related questions. Consequently, scientists from Istanbul, Turkey conducted a study centered around social media's role as an information source. As social media usage surges, there's a concurrent increase in the demand for medical, surgical, and cosmetic procedures. However, this surge has led to an increased tendency among people to seek procedures from non-qualified practitioners. Undertaking such practices by unskilled individuals poses risks to patient safety and well-being.
The researchers analyzed 47,085 posts tagged with #moleremoval and 21,711 posts with the Turkish equivalent, #bensilme. Notably, the countries with the highest utilization of the #moleremoval hashtag globally were the United Kingdom, India, and the US. Treatment methods for nevi encompass various options, including total surgical excision, shave excision, lasers, radiofrequency, electrocautery, and cryotherapy. However, employing non-specific thermal or cold damage methods heightens the probability of recurrence, leading to confusion between recurrent lesions and atypical melanocytic nevi or melanoma. While dermoscopy proves to be a valuable tool in capable hands, biopsy remains a more dependable method in uncertain cases. Obtaining medical information from trustworthy sources on social media is imperative, given that individuals primarily turn to these platforms when making decisions about their treatment. Information sourced from unqualified channels can steer individuals in the wrong direction, resulting in unnecessary treatment and potential harm. Hence, it's critical for dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and other medical professionals to disseminate high-quality, reliable content.
