Neuroprotective effects of black pepper
Neurological disorders, affecting nearly one billion people globally, are exacerbated by aging. These disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, lack adequate treatments, posing a significant public health burden. While some drugs provide symptomatic relief, they fail to halt disease progression. Molecular target-based therapies have been introduced, but traditional treatments may lose efficacy over time and lead to adverse effects. Thus, there's a pressing need for safer and more effective therapeutic options.
According to the study from Korea, brain aging, characterized by oxidative stress, altered proteostasis, and neuroinflammation, contributes to age-related neurological disorders. Chronic inflammation leads to cognitive dysfunction, but biological aging may not match chronological aging, offering potential avenues for intervention. Black pepper, renowned for its culinary and medicinal properties, contains neuroprotective compounds, notably piperine, which demonstrates promising therapeutic potential in neurological disorders. Piperine shows various neuropharmacological actions, suggesting it as a potential treatment.
