Can seeds help fight diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health issue characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insulin dysfunction. Managing diabetes effectively often requires a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and dietary interventions. Emerging research suggests that certain seeds, such as sunflower and flax seeds, may play a beneficial role in controlling blood sugar levels due to their bioactive components.
Sunflower seeds are rich in nutrients like chlorogenic acid and sulfur-containing proteins, which have shown potential in lowering blood glucose levels. These seeds also contain antioxidants that may help prevent diabetes by reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting the formation of harmful compounds associated with hyperglycemia. Experimental studies on both humans and animals have indicated that sunflower seed extracts can improve insulin secretion and reduce the severity of diabetes.
Similarly, flax seeds are recognized for their high levels of soluble fiber and lignans, which help regulate glucose metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity. Studies have shown that regular consumption of flax seeds can lower fasting plasma glucose levels and maintain normal blood sugar levels post-meal. Additionally, flaxseed components like secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) have demonstrated anti-diabetic effects, delaying the onset of diabetes in animal models and reducing complications in human studies.
Although sunflower and flax seeds show promise as natural remedies for diabetes, further research is needed to fully understand their mechanisms and establish precise guidelines for their use in diabetes management.
