WALANT approach in hand surgery- pros and cons!

Ole Vyrva · CLINICAL topics

I wanted to find out opinions regarding "Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet" technique in hand surgery. After meeting Dr. Lalonde at one of the ASSH meetings years ago, I have been using this method in my own practice with certain success. And no complications with local epinephrine. This approach not only enhances patient comfort but also allows for real-time adjustments during procedures, which can be particularly useful in tendon repairs and other intricate hand surgeries. But more and more often I come across with cons for this approach. Any relevant opinions out there?

Comments

Ole Vyrva: Yes! Totally agree for CT releases. This book is great, by the way 👍

Pavlo Miroshnichenko: I've been using WALANT for my carpal tunnel releases, and the difference in patient recovery time is better. They appreciate being awake and involved in their care, and I've noticed a significant reduction in postoperative complications ✔️
