Any strategies for improving patient adherence to antihypertensive?

Olena Vyrva · CLINICAL topics

Hi colleagues! One of the ongoing challenges in our practice is getting patients to stick to their antihypertensive meds. It’s frustrating because we know how important it is for controlling blood pressure and preventing complications. I’m curious, what practical strategies have you found helpful in improving adherence? Simplified dosing, patient education, or maybe some tech solutions? Please share some tips!

Fernanda Galvis Espinosa: I’ve been using reminder systems like mobile apps that alert patients when it’s time to take their meds. These apps also track adherence, so we have something concrete to discuss during follow-ups. This article provides a good insight on available apps and measure. It was published in 2019 though, so there might be newer options on the market: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6746067/
