Ole Vyrva · PRACTICE topics
I wanted to start a discussion on the use of antibiotics during surgery. Recently, there have been some updates to the guidelines regarding which antibiotics to use and how long they should be administered to prevent surgical site infections. These changes are important for improving patient outcomes and combating antibiotic resistance. How are you incorporating these new guidelines into your practice?

Ole Vyrva: Here is a nice recent work by Dhole et al: Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Surgery: Current Insights and Future Directions for Surgical Site Infection Prevention
Olena Vyrva: One challenge I’ve faced is balancing the guidelines with patient-specific factors, especially in those with allergies or chronic conditions. I’ve found consulting with our infectious disease specialist really helpful in these cases. How do others manage patients with complex histories??
Olena Vyrva: Yes, a good review indeed. Thanks!
Sara Kufin: We’ve integrated the new guidelines into our pre-op checklist. This way, everyone on the surgical team is aware and can double-check that antibiotics are given at the right time. Communication is key to making this work seamlessly!
Pavlo Miroshnichenko: The emphasis on selecting the right antibiotic and limiting the duration has helped reduce postoperative infections significantly 🦠 Additionally, it’s crucial to be mindful of antibiotic resistance
