What accelerates the aging process of the skin?

Every woman strives to look beautiful. An essential component of beauty is well-cared-for radiant skin, a healthy flush, and a sparkle in the eyes. Now, a vast number of creams, emulsions, and serums are being produced worldwide – all that nourishes and moisturizes the skin, contributing to prolonging youthfulness. With such an arsenal, one would expect every individual to look stunning. However, why doesn’t this happen? To understand what exactly affects skin elasticity, doctors advise paying attention to dietary habits, which can lead to premature skin aging.

Excessive Sugar Consumption

Excessive sugar consumption has a detrimental impact on overall health, and as a result of recent research, it has become clear that it also negatively affects the skin.

One of the reasons for premature skin aging is the so-called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) – proteins or lipids that become glycated under the influence of sugar. They accumulate in blood vessel walls, which can disrupt cell structure and function, causing the skin to gradually lose its firmness and develop visible signs of aging such as folds and wrinkles. According to Skin Therapy Letter, AGEs can contribute to skin aging by reducing its wound-healing capabilities and stress resistance. Collagen and elastin are two types of proteins present in the skin, and these proteins play a vital role in maintaining skin elasticity and youthfulness.

Certainly, sugar is necessary for the body; glucose, in particular, improves brain function. However, it’s important to remember that a balanced diet and proper nutrition are equally important for maintaining health and youthfulness.

Fat: Yes or No?

Fat is an important component of our diet, providing the body with energy and bioactive substances. For example, fish oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3, omega-6, vitamins A and D, which stimulate hair growth, ensure smooth and toned skin, maintain the elasticity of muscle fibers, stimulate brain activity, and prevent dry hair and skin. However, according to a 2020 report published in the journal Nutrients, excessive consumption of fatty foods can trigger an inflammatory reaction in the skin, leading to the development of acne and other skin conditions. Therefore, it's important to control the amount of fat in one's diet.

Fast Food

It is no longer a secret that fast food is harmful, but many people still find it difficult to give up their favorite dishes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40% of us consume fast food on a daily basis. Regular consumption of fast food is associated with several serious chronic diseases. Such food generates an excess of free radicals, byproducts of metabolism that occur when cells use oxygen to convert food into energy. Now imagine that instead of energy, you end up with an excess of toxins and a lack of antioxidants. If this happens infrequently, the body can cope with such a load without consequences. However, if it is your regular diet, the body expends all its energy on detoxification. In such a case, there can be no talk of overall health or skin beauty in particular.

Dehydration

Maintaining hydration is the key to health and well-being. Water initiates metabolism, aids in detoxifying the body, and moisturizes the skin. In a healthy adult with a normal body mass index (BMI), water constitutes 60% of the total body weight, and dehydration can occur when only 3% of this mass is lost due to water deficiency. Among the many vital functions of water are temperature regulation, digestion assistance, support for cognitive and cardiac functions, and the preservation of skin elasticity. The recommended daily intake of drinking water is 2-2.5 liters, not including hot beverages. Insufficient water intake leads to dehydration, which, in turn, causes the skin to lose collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, making wrinkles more noticeable.

Many of us, in our quest to improve skin tone and complexion, focus on cosmetic products. Certainly, they protect and moisturize the skin, extending its youthfulness... But it all begins from within. Beauty, firmness, and the radiance of the skin are possible only when considering the consumption of healthy, nutritious, vitamin- and mineral-rich foods, and, of course, maintaining a proper water balance. Only in such cases the results will not keep you waiting.
