Simple Ways to Extend Youthfulness
Aging is an inevitable process, but premature aging is truly something to be concerned about. “You are as young as you feel,” wrote James Joyce in his work “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.” This phrase has long become famous, and it is hard to disagree with the author. Modern medicine also suggests that it is indeed possible to prolong the “spring of life,” but it requires reevaluating our approach to nutrition and lifestyle. Making small changes to our daily routine can also be beneficial. Scientists have identified several simple methods that give us energy and prolong youthfulness.
The Power of Meditation
Sara Lazar, a neurologist from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (HMSMGH), conducted a study titled “Meditation experience is associated with increased cortical thickness,” in which she scanned the brains of meditators. Dr. Lazar discovered that people who have been practicing meditation for a long time show increased gray matter in the auditory and sensory regions of the cerebral cortex. This may be due to the fact that individuals pay a lot of attention to their breathing, sounds, and other factors during meditation. Dr. Lazar also noted an increase in gray matter in the frontal part of the cerebral cortex, which is associated with memory and decision-making. Additionally, individuals who meditate at the age of fifty have the same amount of gray matter as those in their twenties, indicating the power of meditation and the positive changes it brings to the body.
The Benefits of Mental Activity
A new study called “The influence of higher-order cognitive training on processing speed-related neural activity” has found that cognitive training enhances the energy efficiency of the human brain. In a randomized clinical trial, participants aged 56 to 71 were offered the opportunity to be part of the study. The participants were divided into three groups, with one group devoting twelve weeks to cognitive training, while the others were assigned to two control groups. By measuring brain activity, scientists discovered a significant increase between reaction time and the activity of the frontal lobes of the brain in the group that underwent cognitive training compared to the control groups, suggesting that they didn't have to work as hard to perform tasks. The researchers hope that these results will spur further studies aimed at replenishing the potential of the aging brain.
Scientists also conducted another experiment related to epigenetics, which revealed that the brain has the ability to change and heal itself. This adaptability is known as neuroplasticity, which is necessary to maintain brain function throughout life. Games that focus on memory and cleverness strengthen neural connections in the brain. Therefore, it is worth considering whether, instead of wasting time on social media, it would be better to engage in brain training activities.
Territory of Feelings
Scientists insist that spending time with friends or family is essential for overall well-being because genuine social interaction makes a person happy. We all need empathy and emotions. It is necessary to express our emotions and let them out.
This also includes romantic relationships and a healthy, fulfilling sex life. Researchers believe that sex prolongs life, improves mood, regulates hormone production, and calms the nervous system.
Exercises for Physical Health
Joint flexibility decreases with age, but doctors from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) suggest that following a systematic and progressive flexibility program is beneficial for maintaining healthy mobility. Even a few minutes of light stretching every morning can make a difference for physical health.
A study published in the Cell Press journal shows that physical exercise can keep muscles toned, halting or even reversing cellular aging in the body.
The Power of Communication
It is a well-known fact that loneliness has a negative impact on a person’s psychological health. But did you know that it can actually affect genes and potentially shorten your life?
To delve into this matter further, in 2014, scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna conducted a study on the telomere length (the protective segments at the ends of chromosomes) of African grey parrots kept in captivity. The results were published in the PLOS ONE journal.
The study shows that loneliness can have a detrimental effect on telomeres, which shorten each time a cell divides. Longer telomeres are associated with slower aging, fewer age-related diseases, and consequently, a longer lifespan.
The parrots in the study were kept in different conditions: some were housed alone in individual cages, while others were paired with a companion bird. The solitary parrots had shorter telomeres compared to those in pairs.
This finding confirms that social isolation and other stress factors impact human lifespan. Loneliness also increases the risk of depression, reduces cognitive abilities, and raises the incidence of cardiovascular and other serious diseases such as obesity and smoking.
Nutrition and Supplements
A balanced diet high in whole foods provides the body with the necessary nutrients to maintain a good shape. However, it is important to avoid excessive consumption of refined sugar as it can lead to serious diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
Currently, there is a vast array of vitamins and dietary supplements available worldwide. However, taking them without the prescription of a healthcare professional can be dangerous for your health.
Quality Sleep
According to a survey conducted by Vault Health, 41% of people sleep an average of six hours or less per day. To ensure a restful and healthy sleep, it is necessary to reduce caffeine intake and avoid using gadgets a few hours before bedtime. These simple rules can help you relax before sleep and calm your nervous system.
It is also advisable to avoid intense physical activity in the evening, as it stimulates the body, which can hinder healthy sleep.
Say “No” to Stress
If chronic stress is not controlled, it can lead to depression, cardiovascular and other serious illnesses that can negatively affect your health and, consequently, your quality of life. To address this, there are effective relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation. It has been scientifically proven that they reduce stress levels, calm the nervous system, and provide a sense of ease and freedom.
Benefits of Beverages
Moderate alcohol consumption increases the level of “good” cholesterol – high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Red wine promotes the production of red blood cells, which improve heart function.
When considering non-alcoholic beverages such as green tea and coffee, it is important to know that they contain antioxidants that help fight aging. A 2013 study published in The Stroke journal mentions that consuming four cups of green tea a day can reduce the risk of stroke by 20%. Scientists believe this is due to compounds called catechins, which help regulate blood pressure and improve blood flow.
Caring for the Skin
The condition of facial skin affects the perception of age, health, and attractiveness. Therefore, it is important to understand that to prevent premature wrinkles and pigmentation, it is necessary to use sunscreen, moisturize and nourish the skin, consume an adequate amount of water, and eat healthy food. These measures will help prolong the healthy appearance of the skin.
Youth... How much meaning lies within this definition. It is difficult to cross the threshold and let life take its course without paying attention to age-related changes... Physical strength and health are not something that can be taken for granted but rather they are the result of consistent efforts. Numerous studies indicate that it is possible to slow down the biological clock, though it requires self-discipline and conscious choices towards beauty and health!
